Gas Leak at Minisink Compressor Station Shuts Down Jacobs Rd. for Hours on Sunday Evening, Residents Concerned About Fire and Safety Risks

By on September 8, 2014

Minisink, NY, Sept. 8th, 2014– Dozens of emergency vehicles rushed into Minisink and blocked Jacobs Rd. last night when a strong gas smell was detected in the vicinity of the Minisink Compressor, shortly after 7:00 p.m. Volunteer Fire Department officials reported the leak to Millennium/Columbia Gas, and waited over an hour on Jacobs Rd. with fire and EMS vehicles stationed all along the road. Columbia Gas representatives arrived at approximately 8:45 p.m. and deemed the situation as safe, before dispersing the emergency response units.

Families in Minisink are disturbed by the lack of communication from Millennium during this event, and the length of time it took gas company officials to arrive. Many Minisink residents live with heart conditions, auto-immune diseases, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other health concerns; these emergency events are not only challenging on a logistical level, they directly impact stress levels, and therefore the health, of individuals living with chronic ailments.

This concerning event occurred just three weeks after the Minisink community learned they had lost their case against the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Millennium Pipeline, Inc. at the U.S. Court of Appeals. Legal options going forward are being discussed with the community’s lawyer, D.C.-based Carolyn Elefant.
